Optical Communications Ground Terminals
Optical communications ground terminals provides for unprecedented high-speed and high-throughput connectivity between satellites and the ground and thus serve as access points to terrestrial network infrastructure.
Link Scenarios
Optical communications ground terminals are typically used for bidirectional data links to and from satellites operating as interlinked constellations or for downstreaming data from Earth observation satellites.
The widest link availability is guaranteed by ground terminal diversity schemes that utilize multiple optical ground stations at different locations. The locations for the ground terminals are selected so that their aggregate availability – the availability of at least any one ground station – is statistically maximized by using historical weather data. Depending on ground terminal locations, and the number of ground terminals, up to 100% availability can be achieved.
